Opinion: Mute Swans (Annapolis [Maryland] Capital - 05/10/03): Bill Dollinger, director of the Washington, D.C., office of Friends of Animals takes issue with the Capital's editorial of 04/27/03 in support of the Maryland DNR's Mute Swan management plan, proclaiming it "short on science and ethics, but correct on one point--shooting swans will result in passionate protests." Dollinger also repeats the FoA refrain that this is simply a ploy by the DNR to "provide hunters with one more trophy bird."

The True Face of Mute Swans--A Letter to FoA from Talbot County, Maryland (Friends of Animals - first noted 05/08/03): In a letter dated 05/06/03, Maryland resident (and probable FoA member) Jean Hearn relates personal experiences with a pair of Mute Swans and suggests that commercial crabbers and clam diggers are more destructive of submerged aquatic vegetation than are Mute Swans.

Death Sentence for Mute Swans Not An Easy Decision (Bay Weekly [Maryland] - 05/08/03): In his Chesapeake Outdoors column, C. D. Dollar supports the Maryland DNR plan to kill 1,500 Mute Swans, but levels criticism at opponents such as Friends of Animals and Save Maryland's Swans for offering "little but emotionally charged rhetoric and erroneous jargon."

Battleship Cove Gets a Birds-Eye View (Fall River [Massachusetts] Herald-News - 05/05/03): Located in Fall River, Massachusetts, Battleship Cove has historic U.S. Navy vessels on display for educational tours by the public. Staff reporter James Finlaw says that a pair of Mute Swans has built a nest (and the female is currently incubating 7 eggs) on a work float lashed to a pier that abuts the destroyer Joseph P. Kennedy. The swans themselves have become part of the tourist attraction, and the facility's staff looks out for them.

Drive Slowly in Swan Zone (The Lakeland [Florida] Ledger - 05/04/03): In Lakeland, Florida, four pairs of Mute Swans have abandoned the traditional nesting area in a grassy strip between Lake Morton and a busy street that encircles the lake to nest across the street, thus putting themselves and motorists in jeopardy. The lake harbors 120 swans, including 65 Black Swans, 44 Mute Swans, and 3 Black-necked Swans.
