One Lesson in History, One on Mute Swans (Easton [Maryland] Star-Democrat - 04/30/03): Thomas F. Norton counters the oft-cited statement that Maryland's Mute Swan population originated from 5 birds that escaped from captivity in 1962 by claiming that swans have been "living wild" on the Eastern Shore since the 1930's, and that he photographed them nesting near the mouth of Elbert's Cove in 1953.

Shooting Swans: Unpopular But Necessary (The Annapolis [Maryland] Capital - 04/27/03): This editorial predicts that Maryland "State officials can expect a lot of grief from unhappy residents who enjoy watching the swans," but concludes that the plan to shoot 1,500 Mute Swans is "a reasonable policy" given the amount of tax money going to replenishing the submerged aquatic vegetation–of which Mute Swans consume 10.5 million pounds annually–that is crucial to the health of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem.
